Polyphemus Moth

 Here is a Polyphemus moth.  Usually moths hold their wings flat, but sometimes they will fold them up like a butterfly. This one would have a wingspan of about 4" if the wings were held flat.  Not visible in this pose are distinct "eyes" on the back wings.

 No shortage of fur on this guy's legs.  The full wide antenna indicate that it's a male.

Neat little eye-dots on the tips of the wings.
The caterpillar of the Polyphemus moth is bright green with thin yellow stripes and small yellow dots.  They feed primarily on trees.

  1. I don't think I have ever seen one of these, although I might have and not known it as they certanly could blend in with many surroundings.
